The convoy of a former Governor of Gombe State and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic, Danjuma Mohammed Goje, was involved in a ghastly road mishap, in Tumu, a village in Gombe State killing a man identified as Haruna Maigari. Unfortunate Haranu met his untimely death at the age of 18.
The tragic incident, which occurred in Tumu village of Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, also left two other persons, Jalo Bappa-Sabo and Umar Adamu seriously injured.
Confirming the accident, Musa Yakubu Salisu, an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) told newsmen in Tumu village that the sad incident was first reported to Pindiga Police Post on Friday at about 7pm shortly after it happened.
He said. “On Friday, around 7.30 pm, we received a call from the police office in Tumu that there was a serious and fatal accident; that our assistance was needed to enable them to take the victims to the hospital.”
Salisu said after receiving the distress call, he dashed off to the hospital where the accident victims were admitted in Tumu.
Fortunately, he found out that they were already admitted in the Accident and Emergency Ward, receiving treatment.
However, when their case was confirmed critical, the victims were referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gombe for further treatment.
Upon investigation, DailyPost gathered that it was double tragedy for the family of Alhaji Maigari Maimanja who Governor Goje came to condole with on the death of their daughter but ended up killing one of his sons, Maigari.
The late Maigari was crushed when Goje’s convoy was leaving the premises due to the crowd of people surrounding the cars.
An eyewitness blamed the incident on the usual carelessness of escort drivers .
The man who craved anonymous noted that, “they drive as if there is insurance against death. They drive at such ungodly speed that you would think the drivers are under some external influence.”
The source queried the wisdom of “taking such a long convoy to a small village, just to pay condolence”, asking rhetorically, “ Couldn’t the man (Senator Goje) have quietly gone to pay his condolence with just a car or two? Why the long convoy of cars and the accompanying fanfare?”
Goje, a former governor of the state, is bound to attract attention; especially in a rural community such as the one where the accident took place. That should ordinarily call for greater caution among the drivers in the convoy,” he advised.
Meanwhile, the still mourning and embittered father of the deceased confirmed that the former Governor visited him to commiserate with him over the death of his sister. He added that after the evening prayers, Goje left the town but doubling his pains, by crushing his son and two others while he was leaving Tumu town.
According to him, the police around the vicinity hurriedly took his son to Tumu cottage hospital, where he was referred to the FMC, Gombe, yet his life couldn’t be saved.
